The year is 2038. The world as we know it is on the verge of being pushed over the edge into WWIII. At one time, The United States sought to solve world peace with the SkyNET program, however, it failed to produce measurable results and would prove to be incapable of preventing the future war...
FOREWORD
The year is 2038. The world as we know it is on the verge of being pushed over the edge into WWIII. At one time, The United States sought to solve world peace with the SkyNET program, however, it failed to produce measurable results and would prove to be incapable of preventing the future war. SkyNET was shelved as more nations sought alternatives to a lasting world peace.
Little did they know, their efforts would ultimately push mankind to the closest it's been to destruction.
TIMELINE
2028The world as we know it today. Recovered from a global pandemic, and recovering from years of economic stagnancy, the future looks bright.
Russia has pulled out of Ukraine under the stress of sanctions, corruption, and the looming threat of talks of top-down reforms of the UN, to include the establishment of a standing, multi-nation peacekeeping force following the weakened credibility of NATO after major negative headlines caused by a seemingly connected network of whistleblowers.
2029The UN referendums pass, barely. NATO is dissolved; many member nations now form the United Nations Strategic Operations Force (UNSOF). A multi-national standing force with troops, training, and equipment on loan from member nations of the new UN Security Council. Participating nations must meet obligations for readiness and manpower or risk their seat being revoked.
2030
The first deployment takes place in Q2 of 2030, farther ahead of schedule than anyone had envisioned in their wildest dreams. The struggle for peace in Liberia ends three days before the new year. Support, funding, and optimism for the UNSOF, and by extension, the future, is never higher.
2031
Following the near complete economic collapse in Russia, and the death of President Vladimir Putin due to ill health, a power vacuum begins a three-week period where news stations report that different parties, and even groups, have seized control of Russia, often contradicting themselves over the same B-roll footage.
By the end of Q3 it becomes clear two factions remain, vying for power. The remnant of the government of the Russian Federation, and the New Soviet Separatists (NSS), hardliners aiming to revitalize the Soviet Union with renewed zeal. By Q4, analysts are certain yet another Russian civil war looms nearer by the day.
2032
Following UN Security Council revocation after failing to meet readiness goals, Italy, Greece, the Balkan states, and Turkey form their own economic bloc. Capitalizing on the appeal of the old world. A speaker is chosen to represent this new conglomerate, and quickly begins to inspire the population with charismatic speeches, and effective (if iron-fisted) resolutions that drastically improve the quality of life for the effected citizens.
Human rights advocacy groups raise concerns with media outlets, and the UN.
2033
Based out of Germany post-reform, Kohler Solutions Incorporated (KSI) becomes the worlds largest PMC firm after securing lucrative contracts in Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.
Critics are vocal regarding alleged atrocities committed by contract soldiers, however, their pleas fall on deaf ears as the UNSOF is happy to share the peacekeeping workload. KSI stock becomes comparative to Blackrock by Q4.
The Unites States begins to use its intelligence capacity to audit UNSOF contributions by member states of the new UN Security Council, and publicly threatens to back out if discrepancies are found.
2034
The member states of the rising economic power in Southern Europe establish military alliances of their own, mimicking that of the UNSOF.
Culturally, the "Nayib Bukele" of Europe has seemingly done the impossible and smoothed over tensions with people that have been at odds for centuries. The Balkan states for the first time in recent history, are considered safe and stable. The UN withdraws humanitarian support for the region. Spokesmen for the UN Security Council state that is was their decision, the new Southern bloc states that it was theirs.
2035
Open hostilities begin on New Years Day of 2035 in Russia. The Russian Federation and the NSS are now fully engulfed in a civil war after a failed NSS sponsored coup attempt. Russian Federation security forces attempt to round up supporters of the movement but are bogged down by crowds of citizens in support of the new Soviet Union, many are rounded up and forced to swear loyalty to the NSS themselves.
The UN passes a resolution not to intervene, citing manpower constraints as a new insurgent cell springs up in Malaysia. Critics are quick to point out the large presence of UNSOF personnel on the borders between Western Europe, Russia, and the new Southern European bloc.
2036
KSI reports record profits and expands operations to every continent save Antartica. Human rights advocates are quick to protest, but demand for KSI's services continues to skyrocket.
A resolution is passed in the Southern European bloc. The new nation state that emerges presents itself, like the NSS, as a rise to glory. The true successor of Rome, the true third iteration of the empire, the Triarii. Moldova, Hungary, Romania, and Ukraine all join the new superpower for security guarantees as Russia descends into chaos.
2037
The Russian civil war appears to be at a standstill. Russian Federation forces retain control of Moscow and most of the North of the country, however, the NSS controls the resource-rich South, and most of the land borders to trade. Most neighboring countries begin to recognize the NSS as the legitimate government of the Russian people.
A terror attack occurs in the metro systems of Tokyo, Seoul, Bejing, Shanghai, and Manila. At the same time, a cyberattack is launched against Japanese infrastructure. A simple manifesto is left at each location. It states that Asia, and the greater Asian people have been divided, conquered, and put at odds for thousands of years because of greed, malice, and pride. The Sovereignty, acting under the will of its supreme leader, The Voice, will unite all of those suppressed for generations, by force if necessary.
The UNSOF immediately declares The Sovereignty a terrorist organization.
Now
Tensions are on the rise.
In Southern Europe, a new superpower rallies its citizens under the banner of ancient glory stolen from them. Critics call it neo-fascism.
In Russia, a civil war threatens to boil over into neighbor states as ambitions grow. Human rights advocates call it a senseless tragedy.
In the West, what was once the most promising icon of world peace has become a quagmire of bureaucracy and inordinate spending.
In Africa, South America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, the largest PMC firm the world has yet seen turns order into profit without oversight.
In East Asia, a new multi-national cell of extremists seeks to topple superpowers in order to shape the world to their liking.
PLAYERS & GAMEPLAYDuring the events of The Brink, players will act as the heads of state for individual nations, corporate identities, and power blocs/factions (herein referred to as factions). Each player assumes the role of a character of their creation for that position.
Each player will have assigned to them 6 advisor NPCs played by yours truly. Advisors will come to you with information regarding their field, options for resolutions to problems, and reports on your previously decided actions. Each advisor will have a unique personality, goals, ambitions, and hates (God help me this is going to be painful to manage, thank the maker for Microsoft Excel). Advisors will have an affinity rating from 0 - 20, which, corresponds to how much they like how you're doing things. High affinity guarantees loyalty, and that they'll go the extra mile for you. If it gets too low, be careful, they may try to actively sabotage your efforts.
Additionally, each player will have various states regarding their faction that all range from 0 - 200. These attributes will indicate the state of your faction in various areas (public opinion, economic power, military readiness, etc.). The higher the number, the better off you are. These will affect each other, and if many are too low, they may snowball.
Each action you take as the head of state of your faction will result in an affinity gain or loss for each advisor, as well as a cost and/or gain for your faction's attributes. You will have to manage the loyalty of your inner circle, and the welfare of your faction, as well as compete with the other players to come out on top.
There is no limit to what you can request of your advisors to have accomplished, or attempt to accomplish, on your behalf. The success, failure, and outcome of these requests will be number crunched by me (I must just love pain why the fuck did I do this to myself) and results will be given to you in a debrief every Sunday. These debriefs are where your advisors will come to you with their info, and you give them questions, orders, etc. etc. etc. You have until the following Friday to respond to your debrief.
Additionally, every Sunday there will be a news bulletin posted below. This will be a recap of the events of the week that are, or were made, public. Aside from acts of espionage or diplomacy, this will be your only source of information about how each other is doing.
METAGAME RULES
To keep it simple, and you the most protected, the only IC communications considered valid are to and from me. Heads of state may not communicate directly to each other unless set up and monitored by me. All communications will take place on the forums in forum direct messages/conversations.
Any player caught metagaming will be removed from the game, their character assassinated in the most embarrassing way I can think of, and their position opened for a new player to drop in.
FACTIONS
To start you off; the major "We have Tom Clancy at home"-esque factions are playable.
